In this project, we transformed an overgrown and outdated outdoor space into a functional, family-friendly backyard. The original site featured an old, deteriorating retaining wall surrounded by dense brush, trees, and an outdated fence. Our first step was to completely demolish the existing wall, remove overgrown vegetation, and clear the area to prepare for new construction.

To enhance both the stability and aesthetic of the space, we built a new 5-foot retaining wall using durable Keystone retaining wall blocks, spanning an impressive 120 feet in length. This wall not only reinforces the landscape but also includes strategically placed stairs, providing easy access to the backyard and improving the overall flow of the space.

Site Preparation and Improvements

Leveling the backyard was a key objective to create a safe, usable area for children to play. We brought in 100 tons of fill dirt to properly grade and stabilize the site, ensuring a smooth, even surface that supports both the new retaining wall and future landscaping needs.

For ground cover, we selected Elite Tall Fescue from Super Sod, known for its lush, green appearance and resilience in various climates. This grass variety offers excellent durability, making it ideal for active family use while maintaining a beautiful, low-maintenance lawn.

Additionally, we improved the property’s drainage system by constructing a functional creek bed designed to manage water runoff effectively.

We also installed clean, attractive edging to define landscape borders and extended the patio space, creating an inviting area perfect for outdoor gatherings and family activities.

The project presented challenges typical of extensive site renovations, including the removal of deeply rooted trees and overgrowth, as well as the complexities involved in demolishing the old retaining wall. Managing the large volume of fill dirt required precise grading to achieve the desired level and stability, particularly to support the structural integrity of the new retaining wall.
